Background - Building Information Modelling (BIM) is changing the worldwide construction industry fundamentally. The international technology advancements and standards development have been facilitating the strategic industry implementation. Several countries are currently demanding BIM mandates, e.g. the United Kingdom - 2016 BIM level 2 compliance for all public projects; The European Parliament approved (in 2014) a Directive for Public Sector Procurement which includes references to BIM; In France, the “Mission numérique” initiative has set similar targets for the short-term; China is planning for 2020 BIM compliance in their strategic development plan and so on.

The Symposium in School of Engineering, Cardiff University
Sponsored by Royal Academy of Engineering (UK) and Engineering School in Cardiff University, this international BIM symposium intends to leverage the joint forces from UK, USA and China to bridge BIM research with policymaking and industry implementation. The symposium invites a China BIM delegation including the leading BIM figure in China – Prof. Yungui LI (Chief BIM scientist of China Ministry of Construction; Director of China State Construction R&D); two USA professors - Prof. Charles Eastman (respected as ‘BIM father’) and Prof Miroslaw Skibniewski (an elected Foreign Member of the Russian Academy of Engineering and the Academy of Engineering in Poland), to work together with UK leading BIM academics and industry practitioners to investigate how BIM research can help construction industry to achieve full potential of BIM and to further shape future BIM policymaking.
